Mayor Michael J. Albano was born to parents Jack and Mafalda (Muffy) Albano in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. He graduated from Longmeadow High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree from Springfield College. Mayor Albano received a Master of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from American International College and a Master in Public Administration Degree from the University of Hartford.. Mayor Albano was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humanics Degree from Springfield College in 2001.

Mayor Albano completed 36 years of public service in 2017, which began with his appointment as a Probation Officer in the Westfield District Court in 1974. He was appointed to the Massachusetts State Parole Board in 1982 by Governor Edward King and reappointed by Governor Michael S. Dukakis in 1987. In 1992 Governor William Weld designated Mr. Albano as a Special Parole Board Member. In 1994 State Auditor A. Joseph DeNucci appointed him as an Audit Specialist.

Mr. Albano has held several appointed positions in Municipal government, having served as a Member of the Mayor’s Youth Commission (1981); as a Member of the Conservation Commission (1990-92); and Chairman of the Mayor’s Task Force on Violence (1990).

In 1985, Mr. Albano was elected to a term on the Springfield School Committee in which he served until January 1, 1990.

In 1991, Mr. Albano was elected to the Springfield City Council. He was reelected in 1993 and unanimously elected City Council President in 1994 and 1995.

Michael Albano was elected as the 52nd Mayor of Springfield, Massachusetts on November 7, 1995 and reelected in 1997, 1999 and 2001 – the first and only Mayor in City history to be elected to four consecutive terms of office serving until January 4, 2004.


In 2012, Michael Albano was elected to the Governor’s Council representing western Massachusetts.  He was reelected in 2014 without opposition.

Mayor Albano has been an Adjunct Faculty member of several colleges including the University of Massachusetts, Springfield Technical Community College and Asnuntuck Community College; as well as lecturing at Westfield State College, Holyoke Community College and Suffolk University.
